January 31, 2007: In Remembrence of Dr. Midnight

I have the sad task of announcing Dave "Dr. Midnight" Kitagawa's passing this past Monday from cardiac arrest stemming from his lifelong fight with diabetes.

I knew of no bigger fan of music than Dave. His Friday night Blue Moon show on KUSF was one of the great joys in his life and his enthusiasm spilled out over the airwaves as he turned his audience on to some of the greatest (if sometimes the weirdest) pop music ever known.

We travelled many miles- literally thousands- to attend Q shows together, and even though I'm a big music know-it-all hog, I never hesitated to let Dave pick the road music. I always knew I would be in for a treat.

Dave was a truly kind & gentle being, a steady and trusted friend, with nary a harsh word for anyone. He is already missed. We need more like him.

I know that Dave would appreciate being remembered as a guy who brought awareness of the Q to as many people as possible. In that spirit, I have reposted the NRBQ Spotlight show that he and I hosted on KUSF on July 30, 2002 in honor of the first Wild Weekend. Let Dr. Midnight, wherever he is, feel you smile as you listen:

NRBQ SPOTLIGHT and the Wild Weekend

Unable to attend the first annual NRBQ Wild Weekend (June 28-30th, 2002) in Hartford, CT, KUSF San Francisco DJ Dr. Midnight, along with studio guest and NRBQologist Gary Hobish, consoled themselves by broadcasting this NRBQ Spotlight show on Sunday, June 30th 2002, between 2 and 4 PM. At the time, KUSF was not able to broadcast via the internet; so I am making the program available in it's entirety here.

The last time the good Doctor did a show like this was back around late 1996, prior to the Moon Pie West Festival of February 1997. (Gary was also in the studio for that broadcast.) While that show was an overall view of the Q's career to that point, the show this time around concentrates on material that has become available since that time- including 3 studio releases (like the latest, "Atsa My Band") and many live and archival recordings, right up to the latest "Music's Been Good To You" and "Live from Mountain Stage," with everything in between!

NOTE February 4th, 2007- I have now located the higher quality files and am modifying the downloading so you can stream either the higher or lower quality audio, splitting the show into 2- 1 hour segments (convenient for burning onto audio CD).
